Yuvraj Singh pays emotional tribute to Diogo Jota: ‘He brought the game to life every time he stepped on the pitch’
In a heartbreaking incident that has stunned the global sports community, Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, along with his brother André Silva, lost their lives in a devastating car accident on Thursday, July 3.
The crash occurred in northwest Spain, where authorities confirmed that the luxury vehicle — a Lamborghini — veered off the road and burst into flames. According to a preliminary investigation by Spanish police, a burst tyre during an overtaking maneuver is suspected to have caused the fatal accident.
Just weeks earlier, Jota had celebrated a milestone in his personal life, marrying his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children.
Jota, who joined Liverpool FC in 2020, quickly became a key figure in the squad. Over his career with the Reds, he netted 65 goals in 182 appearances, playing a crucial role in their 2024–25 Premier League title win as well as the recent UEFA Nations League triumph. His brother André Silva was also a professional footballer, playing for Penafiel in Portugal’s second-tier league.
As the news of the tragedy spread, tributes poured in from across the football and sporting worlds. Fans, fellow players, and clubs alike expressed their grief and remembered Jota for his vibrant energy on the pitch and humble persona off it.
Among those who paid tribute was Yuvraj Singh, former Indian cricket star and a devoted football fan. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Yuvraj wrote a heartfelt message:
“Diogo is gone? It’s hard to believe! He was a baller who brought the game to life every time he stepped onto the field. One of the finest to do it.
I can’t begin to imagine the pain the family must be going through, losing both Diogo and his brother in such a tragedy.
Strength to all who knew and loved them. My deepest condolences.”
Yuvraj, a known Manchester United supporter, joined countless voices mourning a life — and career — cut far too short.
