Shakib Sets Sights on CPL to Reignite Global T20 Career

With no international fixtures on the horizon due to ongoing political turbulence in Bangladesh, Shakib al Hasan is fully focused on reviving his presence in the global T20 circuit. Armed with a no-objection certificate from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the veteran all-rounder is preparing for a busy season across various franchise leagues worldwide.

After recently representing the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, Shakib has now been signed by the Dubai Capitals for the upcoming Global Super League (GSL), scheduled from July 10 to 18 in Guyana. He will also feature in the Max60 T10 tournament for Miami Blaze, taking place in the Cayman Islands from July 16 to 23, before moving on to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) where he will play for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

CPL as an Audition for Bigger Leagues

Shakib’s agent, Rudradeep Banerjee of Second Innings Sports and Entertainment, confirmed that the CPL is being treated as an audition platform to attract interest from higher-profile tournaments like the ILT20 and SA20.

“If there wasn’t demand, he wouldn’t be getting picked. Teams still want match-winners,” Rudradeep told Cricbuzz.

“T20 teams today are seeking experienced cricketers who can win tournaments — not just big names who pull crowds.”

With over 7,400 runs and nearly 500 wickets in T20s, including a career-best 6 for 6, Shakib brings balance, skill, and proven utility to any lineup.

Shakib Banking on Experience Over Preparation

Interestingly, the all-rounder admitted he hasn’t begun formal preparation just yet but feels confident that playing in GSL and Max60 will provide enough match practice before the CPL.

“I haven’t started preparing, but the games in GSL and Max60 will help me gear up. CPL is my target,” Shakib said in an interview on Sunday.

Mentor’s Confidence in Shakib’s Readiness

Mohammad Salahuddin, Shakib’s long-time mentor, isn’t worried about the lack of pre-season preparation. He believes the 37-year-old knows his game better than most.

“With the amount of cricket he’s played, his muscle memory will kick in quickly. What matters most now is his fitness,” Salahuddin said.

He added that as long as Shakib remains physically fit, his vast experience and cricketing IQ will take care of the rest.

A Veteran with Plenty Left to Offer

Shakib is aiming for a strong CPL season to re-establish his value and extend his career in franchise-based leagues. Rudradeep even believes the Bangladesh legend could continue playing up to the age of 40 or 41, especially with his body holding up well and spin bowling being a valuable asset on overseas pitches.

With Bangladesh’s national commitments uncertain, Shakib is now taking control of his career path — and the CPL might just be the stage for his second wave of T20 dominance.
